Lettered AvenuesIn the 1811 Commissioners' Plan, First Avenue was the easternmost avenue that would run continuously from New York to Harlem. The four avenues east of First Avenue, which would be interrupted by indentations in the shoreline, were given letter designations. They retain their original names only below 14th Street. The parts of these avenues above 14th Street have all been either renamed or demapped. See Avenue A, etc. |
